Is there any captivating figure to motivate you in your work? How has these people make any significant changes in your life? I would like to introduce an important figure that I have just learnt. Jay Haley was one of the most influential psychotherapists of the 20th century. He was one of the founding figures of brief and family therapy and one of the more accomplished teachers, supervisors, and authors in these disciplines. Jay Haley never believes in finding the root causes. He does not believe in finding out why people behave the way they do. This is because there can be 101potential roots causes and it depends on which lens we used to diagnose on that particular case. If we used the rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), our hypothesis on client would be Belief; we think that the root problem is beliefs. If we used Psychoanalytic Therapy, we would have link to childhood problem and identity issues. Again if we used Person-centered Therapy, our hypothesis would be that client has not really realized their own potential. Since we can never be sure if we have found the root causes, why bother to find the root causes.

Instead Jay Haley focused on the attempted solution that every one of us tried on to solve our problem. From there, he can assess the effectiveness of the attempted solution; whether if it is effective or not. The goal of this therapy is to resolve a presenting problem by focusing on behavioral sequences. Thus, therapists are concerned about getting clients to behave differently to prevent the repetition of maladaptive sequences and introduce a greater number of alternatives.

My thoughts are always keeping what is working for me and to change the methodology that is not working for me. Another interesting therapy that I have learnt is called the Solution Focus Therapy developed by Steve De Shaze and Insoo Kim Berg. They both believe that client has the required tools to help them solve their own problem. They know what is best for them. Sometimes, we just need to assist them with their thoughts by bringing them to their most desired outcome and working on how to achieve the outcome. For instance, Karl Lewis was the famous sportsman that won many goal medals in the track and field. One day, he was interviewed and a journalist asked him two questions, "Why do you always look far ahead before you run?"
He replied that he is setting a goal. The next question was, "What did you mumble before your run?"
He said, "To you, I was mumbling, but I was not. I was trying to visualize a perfect jump, how it looks like and I kept playing it in my mind

For Kurl Lewis, he was setting his most desired outcome and he works on it. We need to know what we want so that we can work on it. If he doesn't know what a perfect jump looks like, he will not be able to work on it. Solution focus therapy focused on the solution, since we are not interested to know the root causes, we are not really keen to know about the past. We are only concerned about the future and how can we work towards this to achieve what we want. I like to dream, and I know what I want to achieve in my life, hence every step that I take, I am a step closer to my future. My desired income is $150k per annum. I do not dwell on the fact that I am having many degrees and I am not getting an income close to that. In fact, I asked myself, how can I achieve that? Am I willing to take risk? ( My answer is a clear No). I want to take a sure route with statistical proven record and evidence.

Doing business, is one of my dreams that could lead me to being wealthy. On the danger risk consideration, my business may go bust as well. I am not prepared to take the risk at this point of my life. Well, some CEO does earn such pay. Some Lecturer does earn such pay. There are now some maps that can lead to my goals. The next questions come is (how to become a CEO, lecturer or holding a senior position)? I have only one tool that is paper. Yeah sure, I agreed that experience is important as well. However, they are many people with many years of experience holding on to a junior position too. I am not prepared to take such risk. They are many factors besides being promoted to senior positions.

In conclusion, life is all about learning. It is certainly not to learn the same set of skills repeatedly, but on acquiring new knowledge that will enable you to perform better in your role. I am excited about my life journey because I see the best outcome and I am getting closer to my goal. Ultimately I want to set up my own business, I want to run my own cooperation and have my own systemic perspective. For the moment, I needed experience and exposure to do big things. Once I have tasted victory, I believe I will be able to replicate success.

Today I have a friend who called me and asking for some advice over his new job. He felt that he has been leverage by his company. He has been changing jobs after jobs over the last two years. I do not really know how I can advise him on this matter.

Every company got their own systemic perspective. They got their own culture, their own set of thinking and their own company policy. We can either fit into their system or we look for another system elsewhere.

I asked my friend why he left his job; he replied that he could not find any job satisfaction. So I asked him when was the last time that he found a job satisfaction in his job, and how he feels about it and how did it happened?

He mentioned to me that was his latest job before he got retrenched. Despite that, he really likes the job a lot and he always got up early and feeling so motivated to work. I addition, he was given the role he likes and he enjoyed empowerment and the authority to make decisions. Through the conversation, I felt that he was a bit lost. He felt that his degree and his job role do not complement each other. He also mentioned that he does not think this job is going to add any values to his resume in future.

For the moment, besides taking up this job, he has also been looking for other jobs offer. I do not wish to impose my thoughts on him that he should give himself at least 6 months to see if he was not suitable for the job. From my knowledge, he has been changing 6-7 jobs for the past two years; I became worried for him.

Is job hopping becoming the fad recently? Sometime, having a degree may not be a wonderful thing, this is like giving ourselves added cushion and excuse to be choosy. When I was working in StandardCharterd bank, a customer ever told me his successful story and how he was once given an opportunity to work as a lowly clerk in a computer firm, however he worked very hard and proved himself that in the end, he was made the director of the company and given 15% company shares. The point that I am driving here again is expectation.

When you have a degree, you expect to be given a higher paid for job, you naturally expect more from the organization. Can we imagine ourselves as a degree student doing lowest paid job like distributing flyers? I felt that this was fun especially if you are doing for charity sake. There was a book that was published some time back,” If you want to be rich, do not go to school.” I think I can relate that the author was trying to tell us that school kills off your creativity and we tend to think within the box.

If we put aside our pride and work equally hard with those without degree, we would have a slight edge, but if we became complacent, we would be indifferent from others. Firstly, my friend needs to know which field he is keen to pursue. From there, he got to consider the different alternatives and options to get into his goal. Revisit his path after 1 year and see if there is any progression, if not, he should revisit his options and assess it again. By sending his resume now, he is set to leave his company if there is any better offer that comes by. By looking for another options, will he able to concentrate fully on his job? How does it help if another job offer comes by? How will it affect him if the next job offered turned out worse?

In my opinion, one should learn how to manage his/her expectation and equipped the skills to see things from a different platform, only then we will not be faced with too many disappointment.

I have not been blogging for quite some time. Today I went to visit my old time friend; he was reading a book by Adam Khoo. I have never read Adom Khoo’s book before, I heard that he is an inspirational speaker, he taught many motivational strategy and winning habits. Sad to say, I am not too impressed with youngest self made millionaire or very successful people like him. How do we define successful? How do we define rich? Is there a specific definition? To me, being happy is successful. Being happy and be with the one you love is rich. I wish to come out with a book call “How to be happy”.

Many times, you don’t need a motivational speaker to tell you that this is possible. It is all in you, isn’t it? Everyone is different and unique; hence there should be no winning habits in my opinion. What is working for Adom Khoo may not be working for us, and what is working for us may not work for him. In fact, many times, we already know how to solve certain issues, but we just need validation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbk980jV7Ao (Check this out, quite interesting) we should be the master of our own destiny. Is being persistent the winning formula? Is it one of the ingredient needed? Many times, we are too short sighted. Let’s take for instance, a shop owner is very persistent to increase his business, so everyday he worked very hard, from early morning till late night, he is persistent to improve his business. For me, I admire his hard work, but he may not survive his business for long. To me, being persistent is to set your objective right from the beginning, look far, look future, not present. Besides operating longer hours, what can be done to make business more viable? Perhaps more advertisement is needed? Can we cut unnecessary administrative cost? Is there any cheaper way of bringing product awareness to the public? Many times, people always looked at the traditional way of doing things. Just like people always thought that after “O” Level, they must enrolled local Poly or JC and go through the conventional way of getting a degree. Do we have to always conform to society? Sometime, I think we are being conditioned to have certain thoughts. There are many ways of looking at things, if we look from certain platform, we think that it will not work, but if we make some adjustment, it seems ok. Seriously, Adom Khoo believed that everything can be done; this was because he may not have suffered many failures. At the end of the day, it is the belief that we are holding. If you aspired to be a millionaire, then asked yourself, what must you do to be one? Buying Lottery? Buying shares? Yes, I do believe in easy money, but not through these ways. There is no fixed model and you should not believe there is. The only way why inspiration speaker like Adom Khoo could inspire us was because our minds are weaker than his. In the first place, asked yourself what do you really one, set the objective right, and next asked yourself how are you going to get there? How many routes are there to your destination? How is your strength going to help you? What is going to hinder you and list them all out? Next, make a plan how are you going to get there. Along the way, you can always revisit your road to your destination and see if you have made any progression. I yelled to get a degree since young, I could not get into a local Poly, in the end, I went to take a private diploma, I took that same old course for three times, every time, I was so distracted that I didn’t put in 100% to study, in the end, I failed to turn up for final exam thrice. After that, I went on to do my own business. After a year, I went back to school. This time round, I was very determined to finish my diploma. I went to another school. There was something that was driving me so hard that I finished my degree as well. Everyone got their own drive. We must know what drives us. Some people are motivated by money, some people are motivated by love, and some are motivated by family. Frankly, if there is a winning formula, then in my opinion, that knows yourself better and knowing what drives you. Continue to use that drives to motivate yourself. Set your objectives and goal right (If you do not understand yourself, you will not be able to set it right, isn’t it? J Along the way, revisit your plans and see if you are on the right path, if you are not making the progression you desire, brainstorm and asked yourself if there is any alternative. Just like singing, if you are out of tune, then you should get back instead of rushing through the song. Be your own master and live your own dream. Sometime, being able to see things from one angle is a handicapped. Whatever we do, we need to learn how to moderate. Sometime, people take pride too important ( I am guilty of it myself), sometime we are too eager to win, we are too eager to prove a point. If only we are looked things from other perspective, the world will be a more peaceful place without wars and riots. Imagine if we are going to leave earth to another planet, is all the money and land that we possessed transferable? Even our knowledge may not be applicable anymore. Winning is not everything, let alone a winning formula? The key to unlock your heart is in search of your own happiness, sometime, helping others is also a form of happiness. Seeing the one you love being happy can also be another form of happiness.
